What a Fantastic Night at APYAC!

Another unforgettable APYAC Presentation Night is in the books! A big thank you to everyone who helped make the night so special. If you haven’t already, now’s the time to get involved there’s plenty of excitement ahead, so be sure to check the events list below and on our website.

Child Supervision & Safety.

We love seeing families at the Club, but we kindly remind all parents and guardians that children must always be supervised.

On Friday and Saturday nights, we've noticed an increasing issue with unsupervised children, especially around doorways.

To ensure everyone's safety, please:

✅ Assist YOUR children at the doors to prevent accidents.
✅ Ensure they are always wearing shoes.
✅ Remind them to follow Club rules.

Children are the Member’s responsibility, not APYAC’s.

Cherries, cloves, forest berries, pencil shavings on the nose; brightness.  The palate is more direct and savoury, with graphite and a ferrous mineral component, strawberries, beetroots, hung meat, underpinned with tight, ripe and succulent tannins which will no doubt blossom with time in the glass or the cellar.

Olga and Lee Jun 2025

President's Report.

Presentation Night 2025 – A Reel Success!

What a night! APYAC’s 2025 Presentation Night was nothing short of spectacular, with the Clubroom buzzing with energy, laughter, and celebration from start to finish.

A massive thank you to Ascot Catering whose carvery was an absolute crowd-pleaser, there were very few empty plates and plenty of happy bellies! The photo booth added an extra splash of fun, with members capturing memories with mates old and new.

It was fantastic to see more Members make the scoreboard this year than ever before —a true testament to the energy and enthusiasm flooding through our Club.

Lee and Robert Pope

And speaking of waves, we’ve seen an incredible rise in female anglers, thanks in no small part to the inspiring efforts of Olga Harradine. Olga’s decade-long passion and persistence have helped reshape the fishing landscape at APYAC, and this year’s strong female presence shows that her work is paying off in a big way.

Congratulations to all our award winners —the room lit up with pride as names were called and prizes handed-out. A huge shoutout to our Angling Sub-Committee for sourcing an amazing spread of prizes and putting in the hard yards behind the scenes to make the night shine.

We were also proud to recognise Robert Pope with Life Membership, honouring his years of dedicated service to the Club. It was a touching moment, made even more special by the presence of his family.

Although junior fisho Heidi Osborne couldn’t join us due to illness, her epic catch and release Snapper story was met with applause and admiration - she’s a true role model for the next generation.

Harry, Lee, Mick

Special thanks to Elise, Annabelle, and our wonderful staff, who did an incredible job preparing the room and ensuring everything ran seamlessly. Their warm hospitality meant everyone could relax, celebrate, and enjoy the night to the fullest.

And of course, a big hats off to Pat Hutchinson, who once again rallied the legendary old crew and helped make the night one for the books.

Here’s to the fish caught, the friendships formed, and a future that’s looking brighter than ever. Bring on 2026!

Looking forward to seeing you at the Club.

Robert Pope Duke of Edinburgh Award

New Life Member

Robert Pope

After coming to Australia from England in 1959, Robert grew up in Deer Park. He now lives in Beacon Cove.

He began his electrician’s apprenticeship with ICI while studying at Footscray Tech trade school and was awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Prize for Apprentice of the Year in 1967 by Prince Philip.

After touring Australia for three years, he joined the Melbourne wharves in 1974 as an electrician, and was responsible for operating wharf cranes using PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers).

He has long had a love affair with a Volvo P1800, fully restoring it from body to engine, including all electricals.

In 1999, he joined APYAC and brings electrical, electronics, and mechanical skills to the boathouse—helping members with their boats, wiring, lights, and engine starting systems.

We’ve been staggered by his woodworking and wood-finishing skills, evident in the timber inlays on his clinker boat deck, and the engine boxes he has made —even fabricating a steamer for bending timber gunwales.

Robert does not stand for second best, demanding that any project he is associated with is completed to the highest standard.

Use it or lose it

Club Levy - use it or lose it!

Treasurer Chris Herbert is waiting to pounce. He is keen to move unused levies into consolidated revenue.

In accordance with APYAC Rules, all Club credits are cut-off at midnight on 30 June – this year the deadly date falls on a Monday (Club closed) when every cent of unused levy is forfeited by Chris. This forfeit does not apply to your voluntary top-ups into your Club account.

Existing credit can be used for drinks, hire a boat, have a KitKat, purchase Club apparel and more importantly, to enjoy the facilities on offer at APYAC.

Please don’t wait until the last minute, you may not get a booking to use your funds.

RULE CHANGES

At our August General Meeting will be conducting Special Business, asking members to vote on a resolution to adopt new rules of the club. There will be four changes to the existing rules:

  • The Purpose of the Club will be updated to fit our modern activities.
  • We will introduce Honorary Life Members as a category specifically to include the wives and partners of Life Members who have passed-away.
  • Specifying that the income and property of the Club is to be applied solely towards the promotion of the purposes of the Club.
  • Setting-out what happens if the Club ever gets wound up, that the assets will not be distributed to the members but to another organisation undergoing similar activities as ours, AND
  • Explaining the decision process for that, if it is not undertaken by members, it will be undertaken by the Supreme Court of Victoria.

The Resolution will be proposed at the next Committee Meeting, and you'll be advised at the General Meeting on the 2nd July.

You will be emailed with the resolution and the proposed rule changes for your perusal.

We will make it worthwhile coming to the August meeting with the showing of a brilliant video about the Pompei Brothers who made many of the boats in our boathouse, and maybe we’ll have a special speaker.

Voting will only take a few minutes but it is important. It will help our not-for-profit status in years ahead. There is a detailed memorandum below which explains the changes.

In 1909 the founding fathers would've had no idea that 115 years later we would be building shellfish reefs or renting kayaks; it's only fitting that we update our Purpose to make it more consistent with all our current activities

Here is a thumbnail list of what we would like to propose:

The Purpose of the Club is to provide a vibrant and supportive community for its members through the following commitments:

  • Supporting and promoting recreational fishing, and engaging with registered organisations whose purposes align with the Club’s objectives.
  • Focusing on sustainable practices and fish habitat restoration.
  • Providing a welcoming and social environment for members and their guests.
  • Storage maintenance and restoration of small craft and fishing kayaks.
  • Providing a space for private functions, assisting local volunteer groups, other fishing clubs, and the community.
  • Fostering a sense of community amongst members.
  • Preserving the Club's rich history dating back to 1909.
  • Contributing to the broader community.
  • Acquiring and holding any property or easement rights, or privileges which the Club thinks should be used in connection with the Club.
  • Maintaining and altering any buildings or works as necessary.
  • Raising money by entrance fee subscriptions or other payments payable by members, and to grant any rights and privileges to subscribers.
  • Investing, or dealing with monies of the Club.
  • Making donations as necessary, and
  • To do other such lawful things that are conducive to the attainment of the above objects.

The full wording will be sent out to you prior to the Meeting.

To reduce the amount of spam emails information technology experts recommend that we don't put linked email addresses in Tight Lines, so we write the email address, but leave gaps between the words.

It is up to you to put them together.   For example: members @ apyac.org.au

Angling.

Angling Presentation night was a sensational event, congratulations to female club champion Lee Spyrou, male in-house club champion Harry Tsoumbakos and male open club champion Mick Sass.

A special mention to Richard Muscat who gave Mick a run for his money, only one fish separated them at the close of fishing. Congratulations to all other prize winners.

Thank you to the 90 people who made the night a great success, thanks to the Angling Committee for the volunteer work they put in for the fishing season, special thanks to Chantal Meehan who kept the score board updated all season, not an easy task and thankless.

Chris and his team did a fantastic job providing a buffet that exceeded all expectations, a big thanks to Elise, Annabelle, and the APYAC staff who, as usual, made the night work.

Flathead study

We are still proceeding with helping Latrobe University with their Flathead study. Grab your kits in the Langdon Room, and downstairs near the sign-out book. Swabs are to be returned to the Esky in the boat house near the sign-out desk. Again: swab as many flathead as you can, size not important, make sure you return all undersize fish to the Bay.

On the bite.

Flathead are on the bite 2-4 metres of water. We believe a paternoster rig, sinker at the end of your line with one or two droppers above the sinker, is best. Start with a 4/0 or 5/0 hooks. Cut pilchards, squid or fillets of any fish are great bait, they will also take soft plastic lures. Drift over sandy areas from Black Rock to Port Melbourne. Once you catch a few go back over the area as Flathead do tend to school-up in waves on the bottom. Out the back of the club, 100 metres out further from the pier end can be productive.

Bait bandits.

Anglers who buy bait from the club, and book it to your fob, please be sure there are funds on your fob to cover the cost of bait. We are getting more and more bait buyers who do not have enough money on their fobs. The Club is not a bank. Please fix this we do not want to have to name and shame anglers. If you think you are out of credit call Elise to top-up at the club.

Learn to cast for trout.

Watch Tight Lines, there will be a Sunday morning learn-to-cast at Red Tag Pool Fairfield shortly, we will get the VFFA to fire up their barbecue and invite APYAC members to lean to fly fish. You never know you might stumble upon a talking frog!

Weather & Reports.

The weather has been a mixed bag for boaters and anglers, last few days terrible, but end of this week looks settled. The Bay water temperatures have dropped since the last edition (11.96 C top end of the bay, 12.28 C Mid Bay, 14.72 C in the Ocean).

Snapper have pretty much left the bay, there are always resident fish in the bay, they can be hard to find. However snapper have been caught from our pier at Kerferd Road after storms or during strong S-SW winds. Also a few caught off Altona, Port Melbourne, Black Rock, Port Melbourne Piers and Williamstown according to our spies. No reports to get excited about, tough fishing if you are after snapper.

There are good size Gummy Sharks at many of the deep snapper spots, same baits as for large snapper.  Best baits seem to be Silver Whiting, Australian Salmon Fillets, Pilchards, Garfish and Squid.

Whiting have mostly been missing from the usual marks around the Club and reports are not great. They seem to be biting around Point Cook near the sanctuary, and south of there, including Kirks Point. Fish grassy areas 2-5 mts deep and keep moving if you are not catching them. Best baits, Pipis, mussels and squid strips.

Whiting areas are also squid areas, and they are generally plentiful in the winter months so if chasing whiting keep a few squid jigs ready it may be well worth trying for them.

Keep an eye out for birds working as there are still very large schools of Australian Salmon up the Club end of the bay.  Many good salmon caught around the red stick near Altona, a very big school reported out from Williamstown footy. Any smallish slivery or pilchard-looking lure dragged through, or cast into the area the birds are diving-in should produce fish.

Garfish are plentiful in the Bay so if you see them, a light rod with a quill, or similar float, and a small hook with Silverfish (very small almost clear fish about 1-2 cm long), Prawn slivers, or bread dough works.

Ben Scullin from VRFISH caught four Tiger Trout and one Rainbow Trout at Lake Bulleen Merri last week on a minnow lure, cast from the bank.

Rug up, check weather forecasts, keep an eye on the actual weather, do not take risks, give it a go and take care!

A fish in the hand is worth not having to tell anyone about the one that got away.  - Unknown.

History.

History Group member and journalist Grant Aldous investigated the early APYAC Minute Books to come up with a number of interesting snippets for Tight Lines. Many thanks to Grant for all of his work.

Far from being a dry account of monies spent, and motions forwarded and passed, the Minute Books offer a rich vein of insights into how the Club became what it is today. We will continue to share some of the important (and also lighthearted) moments in our shared history in Tight Lines in the coming months.

#21 APYAC: The Big Build

During the Melbourne Olympics year of 1956, the APYAC building committee approved the application for extension to be sent to the Harbour Trust.

This ‘big build’ also took time, like the present big build, but cemented the Club as a fixture on the pier, with this extension of the building and boat shed.

‘Plans submitted to Harbour Trust for a single storey extension with a flat roof.

Building to be approx. 27 X 60 ft on a concrete foundation protected with a stone sea wall.

Walls to be weatherboard to match existing structure.

Cost of material between 1200-2000 pounds.

850 pounds to be withdrawn from the building fund and deposited in a special account.

Only one vote objecting to the proposal.’ (5 December 1956)

In June 1958 the Committee decided that the new building should have 48 boat spaces with washroom, work space and lockers.

This was a decision of great foresight by the Building Committee.

With over 2000 members now, almost 60 years later, perhaps the next stage of building renovation is not far away.

If you have any old club pictures or documents we'd love to get a copy of them. Contact: apyac.volunteers @ gmail.com

APYAC Footy Tipping Competition.

Well what a week of football!

Tip-stars of the week

  • Catweazle (Nick Mulcahy) scored a perfect round. How did he do that when most tip-stars picked 3-4 for the week! He scored a bonus point for getting all tips correct and moves up to 15th on the Leaderboard. He is clearly our tip-star of the week. Rob Westwood also did well with 6 correct tips.
  • Shifdy (Chris Smith) played his Joker and scored 8 in a tough round.
  • Although everyone in the top 10 scored 4 correct tips, third place swaps due to the margin and Ewan (Rachel Eaves) is now in third replacing the travelling Bruey4 (Bruce Caldwell

Memorable Moments

  • Fremantle beat Essendon as expected. Luke Jackson is the key to their fortunes this season. He was a complete stand out.
  • Carlton will be the headline all week with a result that disappointed their fans. But just maybe North are coming good!
  • When the Bulldogs win, they tend to win well and did so against the Tigers
  • Brisbane showed they still have a few tricks beating the Cats down at Geelong, something they have not done since 2003

This Explanatory Memorandum is to assist members to understand the proposed new Rules and why it is appropriate to adopt them. Members who wish to review the proposed new Rules can inspect them on request via email to Secretary@apyac.org.au.

The Club’s lawyers have advised that the Club should adopt the new Rules, to replace the existing Rules, in order to comply with the taxation reporting requirements for not-for-profit organisations to be eligible to complete a not-for-profit self-review, exempting the Club from the requirement to lodge income tax returns.

A summary of the changes in the proposed new Rules is set out below. The new provisions reflect the requirements of various pieces of legislation and industry best practice which impact on the Club.

2.  PURPOSE

A.            Rule 2.1 has been amended to update the objects for which the Club was established. These objects recognise the Club’s core values and purpose, and have been updated to include our current activities, including shellfish reef restoration, history, boat hire etc

B.             The common law states that the objects of a company are to be read broadly and not strictly so as to limit the activities the company can engage in. In this regard, the final object is “To do all such other lawful things that are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objects or any of them”.

5.  CATEGORIES OF MEMBERS

C.             Rule 5.1 (K) introduces Honorary Life Members

D.             Rule 5.7 (viii) ‘Upon the death of a Life Member, the surviving spouse or partner may be offered Honorary Life Membership at the invitation and at the discretion of the Committee.’

[We figure that Life Members give so much to the Club, their other halves having been closely involved in everything to do with the Club, it’s only fair to keep the relationship going after the Life Member dies. - Editor]

E.            5.13.  Honorary Life Member

(a) Honorary Life Members shall be eligible to exercise all the rights and privileges of a Full Member of the Club.

(b) An Honorary Life Member shall be relieved of the requirement to pay the annual subscription, but shall not be relieved of any other financial obligation to the Club.

[Yes, their Vote counts, and Yes they have to pay their Club Levy. - Editor]

F.             5.14 The paragraph ‘Membership not Transferable’ is renumbered.

36.  APPLICATION OF FUNDS

H.            36.8  The income and property of the Club shall be applied solely towards the promotion of the objects of the Club as set forth in these Rules. No portion of the income or property of the Club shall be paid or transferred directly or indirectly by way of dividend bonus or otherwise by way of profit to the members of the Club. Nothing in this rule shall prevent the payment:

(a)   in good faith of reasonable and proper remuneration to any employed officer or other employee of the Club; or,

(b)   in good faith of reasonable and proper remuneration to any member of the Club in return for services actually rendered.

[This paragraph was added to limit the income and property of the Club to being applied solely towards the promotion of the objects of the Club. - Editor]

39.2  WINDING-UP

I.              39.2  If, after satisfaction of all of the Club’s debts and liabilities, any property whatsoever remains, that property shall:

                     (a)  not be transferred, paid to or distributed among the members;

            (b)  be given to some other association or associations having objects similar to the objects of the Club and  which prohibit the distribution of its or their income and property amongst its or their members to an extent at least as great as is imposed on the Club.

[On the winding-up of the Club, if there remains any assets (after the satisfaction of all debts and liabilities), those assets shall not be distributed among the members, but shall be given to an organisation which has similar objects to our Club, and which prohibits the distribution of the assets to its members to at least the same extent as our Club. - Editor]

J.             39.3 The association or associations referred to in rule 39.2(b) shall be determined by:

            (a)  the members of the Club in general meeting (by ordinary resolution) at or before the time of dissolution; or in default thereof,

           (b)  the Supreme Court of Victoria, in accordance with the Act.

[This means that the decision as to which organisation the Club will give the assets to shall be decided by the Club’s members, by ordinary resolution; or the Supreme Court. - Editor]

This summary is intended to provide members with sufficient background and information to enable them to make an informed decision in relation to the proposed special resolution to adopt the new Constitution.

However, there may be matters about which members may have questions not covered by this Memorandum. In those circumstances, they are invited to raise their questions with the Secretary who, if necessary, will obtain advice from the Club’s lawyers to pass back to the member.

The Committee considers the proposed new Rules as being necessary to ensure the Club remains eligible for the not-for-profit self-review, and it recommends that members vote in favour of the Special Resolution. To be passed, the Special Resolution will need votes from not less than three-quarters (75%) of those members who, being eligible to do so, vote in person at the meeting.

Shellfish Reef Restoration.

If you are not up to speed with our involvement in this project, check out the short video by clicking here

The Victorian Fishing Authority recently posted:

"Kayaker's Two Reef

Kayaker's Reef is a small-scale shellfish reef that was installed around 800m south-west of Kerferd Road Pier, Albert Park, in November/December of 2024.

In 5.4m of water, 90 triangles and 45 fish towers were arranged on the bottom, across an area of about 10x20m. The triangles were seeded with native oysters at the Victorian Shellfish Hatchery in Queenscliff, to help restore lost shellfish reefs in Port Phillip.

The triangle and tower structures will attract snapper, whiting and calamari and provide a convenient, near-shore reef for the growing number of kayak and small boat fishers enjoying the Port Phillip fishery, which has been net-free since 2022.

This project was led by Bob Pearce from the Albert Park Yachting and Angling Club, supported by us, and funded 50/50 by the club and recreational fishing licence fees.

We’d also like to acknowledge Reef Design Lab for designing and creating the fish towers, Stonekast for the oyster triangles, Kina Divers for helping to place the oyster triangles and Marine Aquaculture and Commercial Services for installing the reef towers."

Tight Lines - Why so often?

The larger edition of Tight Lines appears at the end of the month to advise you of the next Club Meeting, and always on a Wednesday so you can plan your weekend.

The smaller edition, (which we call Slack Lines behind the scenes)usually appears in the second week of the month to advise changes, events, band Sundays, and the latest Menu Specials.

The clue is in the dateline at the top and bottom.

We have removed all email addresses, not because we don't want to hear from you, but it stops the bots that roam the internet from finding them to send spam email. Just click the contact links instead. For email addresses, just put them back together without any gaps. Tight Lines is edited by James Nixon.
